X-Men’s 13th installment, “New Mutants” is a superhero horror flick that narrates the inner struggles of five new mutants and their battle against Demon Bear. The Josh Boone-directed film opens in theatres on 13 April 2018.

Every week for five weeks, we will be discussing one New Mutant to know about their history, superpowers, and significance to the X-Men story.

We will be beginning with the story of the mutant sorceress Magik. A large part of her history is taken from JLS Comics’ commentary. You can watch the full video here.

She is known as Illyana Rasputin, Illyana Rasputina, Magik and Darkchilde. Darkchilde is her darker, soulless version. She was created by Dave Cockrum and Glenn Mean, and is one of the mutants who transformed into a full-fledged X-Men member.

Superpowers and Weapons

Illyana’s superpowers include teleporting through time and space using stepping discs. She also manipulates magic, can absorb souls, and even summon demons. She can levitate, and project herself on an astral plane. Her weapons are her Soulsword and Psi shields.

History in the Comics

Illyana Rasputin was born in Soviet-era Russia, and is youngest of three children. She is the sister of Piotr Rasputin, better known as Colossus. She first appeared as a baby in Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975, and her name was first heard in Uncanny X-Men 145. She is a descendant of Grigori Rasputin, who made a deal with Mr. Sinister Nathaniel Essex to create a mutant bloodline, a hundred years before Illyana’s birth.

At six years old, she came to live at the X-Men mansion. She was then abducted by the Demon-Lord Belasco, who summoned her to stay in demonic limbo. In limbo, she developed her superpowers from training with an alternate reality Ororo Munroe (Storm), the Cat, as well as an alternate reality Kitty Pryde. Storm taught her magic, spells, and how to cast spells, while the Cat trained her in close-quarters combat. During limbo, she was also able to extract part of her soul to meld her Soulsword. She also aged six or seven years older while in limbo. The alternate-reality Kitty Pryde taught Illyana how to use her Soulsword.

She eventually returned to Russia, where she found out that her parents were murdered by the Russian government. Her body died after acquiring the legacy virus, but her soul remained alive and intact. Her death appeared in The Uncanny X-Men 303 back in 1993. Her Soulsword was embedded in Nightcrawler’s body. Eventually, she was resurrected by Scarlet Witch to fulfill Colossus’ wishes, but Belasco sensed this and forced her back to limbo. She left limbo to bring her Soulsword back to her possession and went back to earth to live with the X-Men. She commonly works with Cyclops.
