Netflix is releasing a lot of good stuff this May, particularly for the horror and fantasy genres. There are also a few movies and series in the sci-fi and superhero genres to look out for.

Netflix Releases for May 2018



A tough police officer meets a mysterious hacker in a future where society is under full government surveillance. The sci-fi thriller film stars Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried.


The Rain: Season 1*

A rain-based virus spreads through a Scandinavian town, killing the people in it and forcing others to shelter in bunkers. Six years after, survivors exit their bunkers and set out to find signs of life.

Supernatural: Season 1

The hit fantasy-horror television series is coming to Netflix this May. Supernatural follows brothers Sam and Dean as they hunt down supernatural creatures living among humans. The series stars Jared Padelecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Mark Shepard, and Jim Beaver. (No release date yet)


A father tries to keep his baby daughter alive after a zombie attacks their makeshift home and kills his wife. Martin Freeman stars in this post-apocalyptic zombie thriller film. (May 18)


A mother, her son, and her best friend go on a trip to the woods to scatter her husband’s ashes. Things take a different turn when a mysterious man appears and begins terrorizing them. This IFC Midnight Horror film stars Toby Nichols, Jaimi Paige, and Alyshia Ochse.

The Reaping

A former Christian missionary investigates the occurrence of these ten Biblical plagues in a small American rural town. Hilary Swank and Idris Elba star in this 2007 psychological horror thriller.

Red Dragon

A retired FBI Agent seeks the help of Dr. Hannibal Lecter in investigating two family massacres in suburban America. The film is an adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novel of the same name. It also serves as a prequel to Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. Red Dragon stars Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, and Ralph Fiennes.

Scream 2

Neve Campbell, Jamie Kennedy, David Arquette, Courtney Cox return in the second film of the blockbuster slasher film franchise. The sequel revolves around copycat killers disguised as Ghostface.



Pan is a prequel to the beloved classic tale of Peter Pan. It’s what people refer to now as an “origins story”. The movie stars Levi Miller as Peter Pan and Hugh Jackman as Captain Hook.

Sliding Doors

Helen’s fate depends on whether she catches or misses a train. This rom-com fantasy film stars Gwyneth Paltrow, John Hannah, and John Lynch.

Superhero / Comics

Arrow: Season 6

Oliver Queen continues to fight new enemies as a vigilante while balancing his responsibilities as mayor and father. Stephen Amell stars in the title role. (No release date yet)

The Flash: Season 4

Grant Gustin returns as Barry Allen in the fourth season of The Flash.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

The superhero film sequel follows Hellboy, Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien, and Johann Krauss as they battle against mythical creatures out to conquer Earth. Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, John Alexander, and James Dodd star in this film.
