After the success of Train to Busan in 2016 and Your Name (Kimi No Nawa) in 2017, comes another slew of movies sure to delight your Asian cinema-holic heart. Here are just some of the few sci-fi and fantasy films to watch out for this 2018. This is by no means exhaustive, so feel free to suggest which other films should we include below.

 

Psychokinesis/염력

Psychokinesis is a sci-fi black comedy that tells the story of Shin Sukhun, a middle-aged working man who unknowingly gains superpowers. He uses these powers to help his own daughter Rumi and the people around him, but also gets him in trouble with authorities. It stars Ryu Seung-ryong, Shim Eun-kyung, Park Jung-min, Kim Min-jae and Jung Yu-mi as Hong Sang-moo. The film is directed by Yeon Sang-ho, who also directed the critically-acclaimed and commercially successful zombie flick, Train to Busan. It will be shown in theatres beginning 31 January 2018. Detective K: Secret of the Bloodsucking Demon/조선명탐정: 흡혈괴마의 비밀

Detective K is back! We first saw Detective K in Secret of the Virtuous Widow in 2011 and then in its sequel, Secret of the Lost Island in 2015. Set in 18th century Joseon era, the movie narrates the story of Detective Kim Min, his friend Seo-pil and a woman named Wol-yeong set out to investigate the killings of novelist Cheon Woon Mong’s novel readers. Is the killer a person, or a mysterious creature? Oh Dal Soo, Kim Myung Min, Kim Ji Won, Heuk Do Po and Kim Sang Beom star in this flick by Kim Seok-Yoon. The movie drops in theatres in Korea this 8 February 2018. Enjoy the trailer below:

Ultraman Geed the Movie/劇場版 ウルトラマンジード つなぐぜ! 願い!!

Ultraman Geed the Movie is a superhero kaiju film and an adaptation of the 2017 series Ultraman Geed. In the film, Riku/Ultraman Geed heads to Okinawa to fight against the Galactron Army in order to stop The Great Brain Hilbaris’ plot to kill all intelligent life forms.  The film stars Tatsuomi Hamada in the title role, and is directed by Koichi Sakomoto. Ultraman drops in Japanese theatres on 10 March 2018. Check out the trailer below:

Inayushiki/いぬやしき

Inayushiki is a film based on the science fiction manga by Hiroya Oku, and the anime of the same time. The movie is about an old man named Inayushiki Ichihiro and a teenager Shishigami Hiro, two individuals who gain superpowers after a meteor explodes in their community. Realizing his power, Icihiro commits himself to healing the sick, fighting crime and doing good. Hiro, on the other hand uses it to kill people around him. The film stars Noritake Kinashi as Inuyashiki Ichihiro and Takeru Satoh. The movie is set for release on 20 April 2018 in Japan. Visit their website here, or watch the trailer below:

Batman Ninja /ニンジャバットマン

Check this out, DC and anime fans! Warner Bros. is producing a film called Batman Ninja, which follows the adventures of the Caped Crusader in Feudal Japan. Together with Catwoman, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin, Batman battles Joker and the rest of the villains in epic sword battles, as you will see in the trailer below. Koichi Yamadera, Ai Kakuma, and Wataru Takagi lend their voices to this fun and adventurous film. There is no release date yet for the film.
